The French SHERCO rider, Loris Gubian has succeeded in winning the 2008 Junior World Trials Championship. Loris has had a very successful season, one in which he stood at the top of the podium seven times. He did not have a great start as he failed to make the podium in the first two trials which were held in Luxembourg and Ireland. From that point on, he did however demonstrate his potential as he won the next three trials. After the trial in Japan is was obvious to his competitors that the championship was his. He managed to accumulate enough of an advantage over the competition to allow him to be proclaimed Champion of the World before the calendar was finalized. In the same championship, British riders Sam Haslam and Ross Danby also finished well, with their fifth and sixth place finishes, confirming Sherco’s success in the 2008 Junior World Championship.
Alexandre Ferrer’s 2008 season culminated with the winning of the European Championship in the junior category. The French rider had a spectacular start to this campaign, winning the first three trials in a row which were held in Ireland, Italy and Poland. After slight descents in the Czech Republic and Sweden he returned with force in Portugal in which he managed to win the event and the European title. The success of Ferrer in the 2008 season was also made note worthy with his excellent third place finish in the Youth Cup World Championship series. With his two victories late in the season, in the Czech Republic and Sweden, he has confirmed that he is one of the riders to be reckoned with in future championships.
The young star of French Enduros, Jeremy Joly, scored a fantastic victory in the last European Grand Prix, which was contested in the French town of Mende. His name and that of Sherco will be inscribed in the golden book of enduro winners. He achieved an outright victory in the junior category on the second day of the race. He had a good race the first day and won a podium spot, however on the second day he rode a brilliant race and nobody was able to stay with him on his Team-Sherco machine. Joly demonstrated the great future potential of this team at this race. After a slow start to the season in which he was unable to race the first two races because of an injury he has raced well enough to finish in fourth place overall in the Junior category with this victory in Mende.
The Red Bull Romaniacs is a real tour de force and one of the most demanding extreme competitions in the world. This was Graham Jarvis’s debut in this event, and the British rider used all of his many years of competitive experience to win the victory. Graham won this most demanding race against all odds, it took all of his clever tactics and excellent riding to pull it off, but pull it off he did. In addition to this victory another milestone was achieved, the victory took place on a 4-stroke motorcycle; this is the first time ever that this has been accomplished. Jarvis rode the new Sherco 2.5i SE, the light agile 4T surpassed all of the 2 strokes, thanks to the performance of the new Sherco and his riding skill the victory was won.
SHERCO will play an important part in the 2009 Dakar, Team Crocoaventures will register a 2.5 that will be ridden by Eric Schiano, a 4.5 for Cyril Portal and a 5.1 for Manu Brags. The aim, in addition to participating in the race, is to make a commitment to the environment. In this way the SHERCO motorcycles that will be used by Team Crocoaventures in the 2009 edition of the Dakar which will be held in South America during the month of January will make a significant environmental impact. The bikes in addition to using electronic fuel injection and catalytic converters will use biological lubricants. The objective of Team Crocoaventures is to minimize the carbon emissions and fund a renewable energy program that is equivalent to 2.25 tons that will occur during the race.

Jarvis also raced in another historical race, the Scott Trial, one of the oldest events of its kind, the 2008 edition was its 94th running. This particular race combines speed and skill and extreme challenges, more so than in a typical trial. This victory marked the eight time that Jarvis has won this race; he has now won this particular race more times than anyone in its history. The Association of European Motorcycles is launching a safety campaign on the risks associated with the infrastructure. This campaign is designed to alert drivers of motorcycles and scooters and was started to coincide with the European Day for Road Safety, organized by the European Commission in Paris. The goal is to raise awareness among drivers, of the risks that stem from the state of the roads, and will take place over a 13 month period with performance and training courses on various aspects related to the safety of driving motorcycles. According to studies 8% of the accidents are caused directly by deficiencies in infrastructure. Feedback to the possible deficiencies is highly encouraged and is paramount in trying to reduce the percentage of accidents.

The ACEM in 2006 published “Recommendations for infrastructure of roads that are safer for two-wheeled motorized vehicles” as part of the integrated approach of its Plan of Action Security. This technical manual, developed with engineers from the service roads and works department is primarily aimed at those responsible, city planners and businesses, to provide useful recommendations for the safety of users of two-wheeled motorized vehicles. The BD which is supported by ACEM elected to extend the useful information from this technical manual. The BD can be found at www.acem.eu/cartoon it includes drawing and reflections on the dangers of crossings, road merging from dangerous areas, diesel and other liquid on the road, areas badly damaged or repaired, ill-conceived traffic devices, driving at night, winter and ice, debris on the pavement, blocks, metal plates and street markers and poorly designed roundabouts. With this road safety campaign, the motorcycle industry reaffirms its commitment to road safety. ACEM, the Association of Manufacturers of European Motorcycles, represents the interests and combined skills of 11 manufacturers of two-wheeled motorized vehicles, producing a total of 26 brands of motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, as well as 15 national associations in 13 European countries.
